The International Writing Program, founded in 1967 in Iowa City, IA, by Paul and Hualing Engle, marked the 50th anniversary of its residency program in 2017 in a number of ways. The centerpiece of the celebration, a series of panel discussions, readings, and a Gala-Fundraiser, took place during the week of the Iowa City Book Festival in October. Participants included a dozen returning alumni, representing each of the program’s five decades; plus guest writers, editors, and scholars. In advance of anniversary week, other events spotlighted the IWP’s institutional history and its legacy of cultural exchange. In August, this IWP@50 website was launched, providing a window into the fifty-year paper and digital archive of the program.
